Ionian Coast

The last unknown coast;

We blame the name for that – officially  Etoakarnania on the Amvrakiko Gulf,  not even the Greeks can pronounce all that….

Ionian Coast Portrait

The coastline  around Paleros, opposite the island of Lefkada, is  the last refuge of those wanting  the calm and benign sea of the Ionian, but without the prices and fight for the best villas.  A five hour drive from Athens with some great sightseeing to do on the way, or a  short transfer from Prevesa International airport, this area is slated to become much more popular as it develops, so get in there early.

BEST FOR

A vast array of outdoor activities, from  birdwatching on the lagoon, fishing and watersports, to sailing around the Ionian archipelago of beautiful small islands, driving up  into the high ranges of the Acarnanian mountains, some below the radar historical sites, rock climbing and caving.

Fresh and local produce: Fresh fish from Paleros Bay, fruit and vegetables from villagers’ gardens, meat from animals raised in a natural environment and extra virgin olive oil

The forested interior is also very much worth exploring, with some  great walking paths and a scattering of unspoiled villages, whose way of life remains profoundly connected to ancient traditions and customs.

Some interesting sightseeing

The point of being here is to have easy access to the sea and a boat and be in a relatively quiet place. There is no typical architecture here as the tourist industry is starting with a clean slate.
